Steamboat Winter Carnival

Steamboat Springs’ Winter Carnival showcases Ski Town U.S.A.®
With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games less than a month away, town gears up with unique winter traditions
In this Olympic year, the Steamboat Springs community is passionate about sharing its heritage, legacy and traditions with the rest of the world. Help Steamboat Springs celebrate as the community bonds together February 3rd-7th to cheer on locals and Team U.S.A. competing at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and for the 97th Annual Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival.
Amazingly Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is home to more winter Olympic athletes than any other town in North America. Community pride is taken to a new level as the 2010 Olympic Send-off & Community Celebration on the evening of Friday, February 5th is coupled with the history of the iconic Winter Carnival festival commemorating the skiing and ranching heritage that has made this region of Colorado famous.
Lincoln Avenue is transformed into a winter wonderland for the Street Events and is closed to traffic as the City’s Parks and Recreation department hauls in more than 400 tons of snow both Saturday and Sunday mornings to cover the street for the impending fun.
“Winter Carnival Street Events is the time to shine for locals and visitors under the age of 14. They get pulled behind horses on snow covered Lincoln Avenue in the traditional yet incredibly unique events including ski joring, street slalom, and the donkey jump,” notes Kara Givnish, Special Events Director at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. “The 3-legged race, obstacle course, dog-dash, and dad-dash allow even the littlest of skiers and snowboarders to partake. Whether cheering on the sidelines, screaming down Lincoln Avenue behind a horse, or tying up with your best bud for the 3-legged race, the Winter Carnival Street Events create unforgettable memories.”
Steamboat Springs’ Winter Carnival is the oldest winter celebration in the West. Introduced by Norwegian, Carl Howelsen in 1914, Winter Carnival was founded to encourage recreation and add excitement to the long Routt County winters. Sponsored by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, it is also a fundraiser for the various ski programs at Howelsen Hill. The first Winter Carnival introduced the town to ski jumping, competitive skiing and the idea that skis could be used as much more than a mode of winter transportation. The event’s success ensured that it would return annually for years to come.
Traditional Carnival favorites include the snow sculpture contest downtown, ski races at Howelsen Hill, snow tubing and the pancake breakfast. Weekend activities include the Street Events on Lincoln Avenue, the Saturday Night Extravaganza at Howelsen Hill and the Diamond Hitch Parade on Sunday featuring the Steamboat Springs High School ski band, the world’s only marching band on skis. Local organizations participate and dress to the 2010 parade theme: “Livin’ the Dream.”
A popular highlight of the Winter Carnival festivities is the Night Extravaganza on Saturday, February 6th at Howelsen Hill. Onlookers watch young local athletes of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club participate in the exhibition that includes skiers carrying torches, fiery hoop jumpers and an impressive fireworks display. The Lighted Man makes his yearly appearance skiing down Howelsen Hill covered in lights while shooting Roman candles and other pyrotechnics from his backpack, a tradition since 1936.
In February, as winter sports lovers relish in the Vancouver Olympic Games, the town of Steamboat Springs will be having its own celebration. 2010 will undoubtedly be a memorable, unforgettable year.

On this 8,000 acre working cattle ranch, you will move cattle, check for sickness, get in strays, and make sure everything on the ranch is doing well. They are approximately 4 hours long and start at 8:00am.
